Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert… near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:

And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

personification: “the hand that mocked them and the heart that fed”
This effect was used to show that the visage or face in the desert was cruel and fair at the same time. It relates to hubris because it shows Ozymandias felt that he was better than everyone else,

Why Shane McConkey was the most influential free ride skier.

Gaffney’s numerical assessment of radness or G.N.A.R, wide powder skis, and skiing a line butt naked while talking to your mum on your phone. None of this would have happened without the legend, Shane McConkey.
Shane McConkey was a professional big mountain skier and base jumper. He realized that the sport had veered away from the original purpose of having fun, instead gone towards a professional and elitist sport. To counter this, Shane stripped completely naked and skied the professional mogul course in front of a crowd of thousands. Needless to say he was banned from Vale, Colorado for life.

.

The Game of GNAR started off as a stupid game between Shane and his friends but it steadily became an international phenomenon in the ski scene. The basis of the game was to have as much fun as possible whilst skiing some of the most technically lines in the world. Each line was given a certain number of points, but you can earn extra by throwing tricks or doing one of the Extra credits points. Example of such Extra credit points are, skiing Butt naked, talking to your mum on the phone while skiing, telling a stranger that you’re the best skier on the mountain. The list goes on and on. The more Shane laughed at something the more likely it would be added to the game. Shane had a quote which states, “If youre getting rad, but there is no one there to see it, are you really getting rad?”. This is pretty much the reason that on any day of the week at Squaw Valley you could hear a radness yell or see pole wacking. The idea of these to things was to generate the largest crowd you could. Shane loved the idea of having an audience and making people laugh. This lead to him embracing butt naked skiing. Could you imagine skiing completely naked in front of 50 people or more? It was nothing more than a walk in the park for Shane.

Shane was able to use the Game of GNAR as a platform for numerous ski movies which in turn gathered the attention of thousands of people. Pro athletes and amateur skiers were hooked into what he did. He bought hundreds of people to his home town of Squaw Valley, California generating thousands of dollars worth of income for the small community. Without Shane, Squaw would never have become the multi million dollar resort that it is today.

Shane McConkey made huge improvements on the technology of skis themselves. Previously most skis were super thin and wooden. Shane had been looking for something better that could glide straight over the snow. So naturally he decided to strap a pair of water skis to his ski boots and drop one of the gnarliest lines in Alaska. They worked perfectly. Within weeks all major ski companies had prototype “powder” skis under production. Another thing created by Shane, which had a huge influence on modern skiing.

Unfortunately Shane died in a horrific base jumping accident in 2009. i can say without a doubt, that even though his life was cut short, in the 40 years he was alive he did more for the sport of big mountain skiing than any other athlete. Can you name a more influential or pioneering professional skier? No you can’t. Cause there are none.

The boys try to tell themselves “fear can’t hurt” them, but

“Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!” said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. “You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are what they are?”
All the boys on the island think that the Beast is something they can “hunt and kill”

The Lord of the Flies

Describe a technique used by the author       Symbolism

William Golding uses the lord of flies or “beast” to symbolize the beast that is human nature. The kids believe there is a beast on the island but the only beast there is themselves. The lord of the flies is the representation of the darkness inside of humans that surfaces when all the securities of society is gone. The children on the island spend hours hunting a beast that doesn’t physically exist. The beast on the island is the children, from the moment they arrive they cause chaos. The plane crashes leave a hideous scar, the animal life on the island is hunted and killed and half of the island get burnt by the signal fire. The children are completely blind to the fact that they are the beast. Simon is the only who is smart enough to figure out what is going on. His conscience makes him hallucinate “The lord of the flies” which is a dead pigs head on a spike. ” “Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!” said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. “You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are what they are?” “. The lord of the flies tells Simon that the beast is part of them all. William Golding uses the technique of symbolism as his way of teaching the reader how destructive humans truly are. Because we are constantly surrounded by our cultural environment we take no notice of the damage and chaos we create around us.

The conch shell is used to symbolize leadership. Humans need something to believe in, or to follow or they will plunge in anarchy. At the beginning of the book The Lord of the Flies, Ralph uses the conch shell to unite all the survivors of the plane crash in one area. Ralph blows the conch and all the kids on the island slowly make their way towards the platform that Piggy and Ralph are on top of. The conch quickly becomes a symbol of power and leadership to the children. Only the person who has the conch may speak

The Sun sets in the distance, glinting through the trees. It creates a warm glow in the forest. Adrenaline pumps through me, hardly noticed as I rip down the trail. As I breath in I can feel the enjoyment in the air. It has seeped off us and into the forest itself. The forest is looking down on us, jealous of our freedom. It makes me feel like the forest is alive somehow. It has its own faint heart beat. Hectic clusters of roots keeping me on my toes. I keep pushing my suspension and body to its limit. I can hear laughter further down the trail. I thrash my bike round the corner like a hurricane through the streets. My friend lies on the side of the track. Dirt streaked up his body after a collision with a tree stump. I spray him in dust wiping the stupid grin off his face. He charges after me both of us in hysterics. Our laughter echoes through the forest. It resonates off of everything. He is so close behind me I can feel his tire scraping mine in the air. Wind whips past me as I race like a crazed animal down a straight part of the trail. I slam on the brakes and come to a stop. I stare and the land around me. The countless numbers of people carving different paths into this landscape. The hours of time poured into creating this masterpiece begins to sink in. I see the souls of the trail builders etched deep into their designs.

After nine long months and a steep one-sided battle with recovery I return. The jump and trail hasn’t changed in the slightest, but the forest has. Its dark and gloomy. Every shadow’s gaze pierce my skin.  My mind is flooded by an uncontrollable surge of memories.  Flashes of that day, in hysterics with my friends, riding until the sun dropped behind the mountains on the horizon. I stand, bike patiently waiting for me to drop, but it haunts me. I remember the pain as it hit me. The sun and happiness from before has gone, replaced by darkness and misery. The jump sits there and taunts me. The whole forest surrounds me, deadly silent. It’s almost as if the trees are waiting in anticipation. My mind hyper-focuses, noticing every small detail. The tire mark imprinted in the dirt, the moss hanging from a branch. The tiny imperfections of the trail laid out before me. I can feel my heart beating, deep within my chest. Adrenaline once coursed through me, replaced now by nerves. Ba doom. My heart thunders within my chest, making my ribs shake. A cool bead of sweat drips down my forehead. My hands are white from gripping the bars so tensely. I feel an ache. My sub-conscious becoming bored with this stagnant activity, craving the rush that is soon to come. I refuse to listen, fearing the consequences of one singular mistake. It’s like a jenga tower. One wrong move and it all comes crashing down.

Blood covered the ground around him. Smoke still drifted from discarded weapons. Corpses lay strewn across the muddy ground,

It was a cold and desolate street.
Wind blew the rubbish in circles.
The man was wandering, deep in thought.

The street was totally deserted, the ground strewn with litter.

The man whose suit itched against his skin, wandered deep in thought.

Birds chirped, wind ripped through the top of the trees. People shouted and laughed. Cassettes wined and chains rattled. The crank of gear changes echo around the forest.

All hope was lost after the planets ecology collapsed.

It was a bright and cold day in April. The clocks were striking thirteen. Winston smith had his chin nuzzled into his breast. He did this in an effort to escape the vile wind. He slipped quickly through the glass door of Victory Mansions. He was not quick enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering with him.

State of Mind

Macbeth’s state of mind changes drastically throughout the text. He lets events in his life have a major effect on his emotion and mental state.

“Macbeth: Liar and slave!.

Messenger: Let me endure your wrath, if’t not be so, Within this three mile may you see it coming, I say a moving grove.

Macbeth: If thou speak false, Upon the next tree thou shalt hang alive!”

This quote shows that as everything Macbeth has done begins to fall apart and get back at him he becomes angry and full of uncontrollable rage. This blind rage takes over above all other emotion and is what eventually leads him to his death. Shakespeare is trying to show us as a viewer that without control over severe emotion
